If you are like most people, your number one fear is talking in front of people. (Believe it or not, people fear public speaking more than they fear death!) If this is you, then you're in the right place. If you're in the minority, you love to speak to audiences. My guess is that most of you fall somewhere in between those two spectrums. My point is this: you are all at different starting points, and it is from that starting point that I want you to build and improve your own skills. You may not ever reach the point where you love speaking in front of people, but by the end of this class, you should at least know how to handle every speaking situation you encounter in and out of school.
In doing so, hopefully you won't end up like this in front of millions of cable TV viewers:

Improve their own overall abilities and confidence in all areas of public speaking
Understand the role of listening in the public speaking process
Use appropriate verbal and nonverbal communication skills through participation in a variety of speaking situations
Know how to analyze the audience in selecting, developing and presenting a topic
Identify how to meet teacher requirements to various class presentations
Identify the differences between speaking to inform, entertain, persuade, and motivate
Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of others’ speeches
Evaluate their own performances through use of audio and video recording
Improve research, organizational and outlining skills through the speech preparation process
Identify the major parts to a speech
Use various techniques to gain the audience’s attention
